For understanding KP Astrology Basics, I would request you to first go through concepts of vedic astrology thoroughly; KP (Krishnamurthi Paddhati) astrology is on the name of famous South Indian Astrologer, reverend Shri K. S. Krishnamurthi Ji; KP astrology is undoubtedly an advanced and extended form of vedic astrology; KP system of astrology is based on the analysis of stars of planets and zodiac houses;

KP Astrology Basics
1). KP & Vimshottari Dasha System
- You will be surprised to know that the whole of KP is based on Vimshottari Dasha System; In fact, division of zodiac into 12 signs, 27 stars & 108 Stars’ Padas or quarters was found to be inadequate by Shri K. S. Krishnamurthi;
- He did intensive research and came to the conclusion that the zodiac must be further sub-divided for accurate predictions; Shri K. S. K. invented the Sublord theory which is based on the vimshottari system as explained in all his works; Shri K. S. K. explained why further sub-division is called for;
2). Prediction in case of Twin Births
- If twins are born with a few minutes difference, Rashi Chart and Navamsa Chart remain the same in almost all the cases of twins; The only difference in some cases is Moon’s dasha balance by a few days; When Rashi & Navamsa charts remain virtually the same, how can we explain differences between life styles of the twins;
- Thus, it becomes difficult in vedic astrology to explain differences between life styles of the twins when one of them studies engineering and the other one studies medicine; when one of them is getting love marriage and the other one not getting married; when one of them goes abroad and the other one never crosses his home town; when one of them has many issues and the other one has no issues; when one of them is fair in color and the other one is jet black; when one of them lives longer and the other one dies soon;
- Hence, keeping the above facts in view, Guruji Shri K. S. K. divided each star or constellation of 13 degrees and 20 minutes into sub-divisions, extent of each such sub-division being the extent or measure of each planet’s proportion in the total dasha period of 120 years;
3). Method to Calculate Measure of Sub-Arc or Sublord
- Extent of each star or constellation = 13 degrees and 20 minutes = 800 minutes;
- Total Vimshottari Dasha period = 120 years;
- The above 800 minutes are distributed to 9 planets in the same order and in the same proportion in which dasha periods are allotted under Vimshottari system;
- Now, dividing 800 minutes by 120 years, we get 6 minutes and 40 seconds; In fact, this is a common factor or multiplier for calculating measure of Sub-arc or Sublord of each of 9 planets;
- For example, sub-arc or sublord of Ketu is calculated as follows: 6.40 X 7 (dasha period of Ketu) = 6×7 minutes & 40×7 seconds = 42 minutes & 280 seconds = 46 minutes & 40 seconds (Here to convert 280 seconds into minutes, we divide it by 60 which gives 4 minutes as quotient and 40 seconds as remainder; These 4 minutes & 40 seconds are added to 42 minutes which gives 46 minutes 40 seconds); Thus, measure of sub-arc or sublord of Ketu is 46 minutes & 40 seconds which can be written as 0.46.40 in the standard format; Here Degree is zero, minutes are 46 & seconds are 40; Similarly, measure of sub-arcs of the remaining planets can be calculated;
4). Measure or Extent of Sub-Arc or Sublord of 9 Planets
| Planets | Calculation | D. M. S. |
| Ketu | 6.40 X 7 | 0.46.40 |
| Venus | 6.40 X 20 | 2.13.20 |
| Sun | 6.40 X 6 | 0.40.00 |
| Moon | 6.40 X 10 | 1.06.40 |
| Mars | 6.40 X 7 | 0.46.40 |
| Rahu | 6.40 X 18 | 2.00.00 |
| Jupiter | 6.40 X 16 | 1.46.40 |
| Saturn | 6.40 X 19 | 2.06.40 |
| Mercury | 6.40 X 17 | 1.53.20 |
| Total | 13.20.00 |
5). Further Sub-divisions of Sub: Relationship between KP & Vimshottari
Further sub-divisions of the sub have also been made on the above basis; They are referred to as sub sub, sub sub sub and sub sub sub sub divisions;
Relationship between KP & Vimshottari system is as follow:
Star Lord = Dasha Lord (Mahadasha Lord in Vedic astrology)
Sub Lord = Bhukti Lord (Antardasha Lord in Vedic astrology)
Sub Sub Lord = Antara Lord (Pratyantardasha Lord in Vedic astrology)
Sub Sub Sub Lord = Sookshma Lord (Sookshma Lord in Vedic astrology)
Sub Sub Sub Sub Lord = Prana Lord (Prana Lord in Vedic astrology)
In KP system, a table containing sub lords numbering from 1 to 249 is used for the purpose of predictions; These sub divisions are further sub divided into sub divisions numbering from 1 to 2193 known as KP Sub Sub theory; These help us in making precise & accurate predictions;
6). Rectification of Horoscope on the basis of Vimshottari System
If there is no relationship between significators of the event and the operating dasha lords, it shows that horoscope may be wrong; In such a situation, time of birth should be changed slightly to change planetary positions, cuspal positions and dasha balance accordingly;
7). Operating Dasha Lords & Their Transit
If on the judgement of a horoscope, it is found that an important event is to take place, then dasha lords have to transit positions of significators; For example, receipt of money is forecast; Suppose, second cuspal position is as follows; Mercury is Sign lord, Moon is Star lord and Rahu is Sub lord; If the current dasha is of Jupiter; So, when Jupiter transits combined position of Mercury, Moon & Rahu, then money is received; This combined position may be Mercury sign, Moon Star & Rahu Sub or Moon Sign, Mercury Star & Rahu Sub or Rahu Star, Moon Sub & Mercury Sub Sub; Similarly, transit of Bhukti, Antara & Sookshma lords will help to fix the date & time of an event exactly;
