Dispositor in Vedic Astrology is a lesser known concept. However, it plays a significant role in making accurate predictions by knowing the real strength of dispositor as well as of depositing planet/planets.

Dispositor in Vedic Astrology: Definition
When a sign is occupied by a planet in a horoscope, its sign lord i.e., lord of the sign of the depositing planet is called its dispositor. For example, in the present horoscope, Mars occupies Gemini sign, so its dispositor is lord of Gemini sign i.e., Mercury. Similarly, in the chart, Venus occupies Virgo sign, so its dispositor is Mercury, lord of Virgo sign. Thus, dispositors of a planet/planets are determined.
Significance of a Dispositor in Vedic Astrology
If a dispositor is well-placed and well-aspected, it strengthens the occupant-planet and gives favorable results relating to prospects of the occupant’s relevant houses; If a dispositor is ill-placed and ill-aspected, it weakens the occupant-planet and gives unfavorable results relating to prospects of the occupant’s relevant houses; On the other hand, an occupant-planet strengthens its dispositor if it is a natural or functional benefic or both and gives beneficial results pertaining to prospects of houses of the dispositor and the occupant both; Whereas an occupant-planet weakens its dispositor if it is a natural or functional malefic or both and gives adverse results relating to prospects of houses of the dispositor and the occupant both.
I will explain in detail significance of a dispositor in vedic astrology with the help of the given birth chart as follows: –
Saturn: Dispositor of Jupiter, Moon & Ketu
- In the given chart, lagna & 10th lord Jupiter & 5th lord Moon are placed in Aquarius sign in 12th house whereas Ketu is placed in Capricorn sign in 11th house; These both signs are owned by Saturn; So, obviously Saturn becomes dispositor of these three planets namely Jupiter, Moon & Ketu; Saturn is lord of 11th & 12th houses and is placed in its own sign in 11th house;
- From the above para, it is clear that during its main or sub periods, Saturn will give results not only related to its houses and placement but also related to houses & placement of Jupiter, Moon & Ketu;
- It means that during dasha periods of Saturn, in addition to matters related to Saturn’s 11th & 12 houses, matters related to lagna & 10th house of Jupiter, 5th house of Moon & 11th house of Ketu will get activated; Here 12th house is common for Saturn, Jupiter & Moon;
- Significance – At face value, Saturn was supposed to give results of only 11th & 12th houses during its dasha periods; But due to being dispositor of Jupiter, Moon & Ketu, Saturn will also give results related to 1st, 5th & 10 houses because 12th house of occupation of Jupiter & Moon and 11th house of occupation of Ketu is common with that of Saturn; On the other hand, during dasha periods of Jupiter & Moon, prospects related to their auspicious houses will improve due to their dispositor Saturn’s placement in 11th house;
- Here, lagna denotes general health, happiness, prestige & prosperity; 5th house denotes middle level intelligence, entertainment, romance, pleasurable pursuits, advisory function & progeny; 10th house denotes livelihood, profession, karma, honor & status; 11th house denotes fulfilment of desires, income, permanent friendship & elder brother; 12th house denotes expenses, loss, occult sciences, bed comforts, foreign place & Moksha;
Mercury: Dispositor of Mars & Venus
- In the given chart, 2nd & 9th lord Mars and 3rd & 8th lord Venus are placed in Gemini & Virgo signs respectively; Both Gemini & Virgo signs are owned by Mercury; So, obviously, Mercury is dispositor of Mars & Venus both; Mercury is 4th & 7th lord and is placed in 6th house ( a trika house); Mercury is aspected by benefic Moon & Jupiter and is conjunct with 6th lord Sun;
- So, due to placement of dispositor in 6th house, matters related not only to Mercury’s ownership but also pertaining to ownership & occupation of Mars & Venus will get hampered; Mars owns 2nd house of wealth, speech, basic education & Kutumb and 9th house of luck, dharma, higher education, long journey & father; Placement of Mars in 4th house though in an inimical sign forms Rajayoga because Mars is lord of 9th house (a strongest trikona); Also, Mars is aspected by benefic Jupiter; Whereas Venus owns 3rd house of parakram, mental inclination, communication, short journey & younger siblings and 8th house of mental anxiety, chronic disease, unearned income, injury & occult sciences; Also, Venus is in the debilitated state; Venus is aspected by Mars;
- So, from the preceding para, it is clear that at its face value, Mars is owner of good houses and it is well-placed and well-aspected and it should give favorable results during its dasha periods; But, due to placement of its dispositor Mercury in 6th house with 6th lord Sun, matters related to relevant houses of Mars will not get fructified to the desired level; However, adverse results will be reduced due to benefic aspect of two benefic planets – Jupiter & Moon on Mercury; On the contrary, it will be beneficial for Mercury that its depositing planet Mars is well-owned, well placed and well-aspected;
- Consequently, Mercury being dispositor of Mars will during its dasha periods give results not only of its houses of ownership viz., 4th & 7th houses and 6th house of its placement but also will give results of 2nd & 9th houses of Mars’ ownership and 4th house of its placement;
- Now, we consider matters related to Venus; At its face value, Venus is lord of two inauspicious 3rd & 8th houses and is in debilitation and also aspected by natural malefic but functional benefic Mars; So, it is not supposed to give good results during its dasha periods; Also, placement of its dispositor Mercury in 6th house worsens matters related to relevant houses of Venus; However, placement of 8th lord through its dispositor in 6th house forms Vipareeta Raja Yoga; This yoga indicates improvement in the related matters after initial struggles;
- Thus, during its dasha periods, Mercury will give results related to 3rd & 8th houses of Venus’s ownership and also to 7th house of its placement in addition to its own related houses and houses of Mars;
Sun: Dispositor of Mercury
- From the given birth chart, we can see that 4th & 7th lord Mercury is placed in Leo sign of Sun; So, here Sun becomes dispositor of Mercury; Sun & Mercury both are aspected by two benefics namely Jupiter & Moon; Although, placement of dispositor of Mercury in 6th house worsens its matters, yet benefic aspect by two benefics improves its matters to some extent;
- So, during its dasha periods, Sun will give results of 4th & 7th houses also in addition to its own sixth house;
Moon: Dispositor of Rahu
- Rahu is placed in sign Cancer owned by Moon; So, Moon becomes dispositor of Rahu;
- Moon’s placement in 12th house worsens matters related to Rahu especially in respect of 5th house;
- However, Moon’s conjunction with Jupiter forming Gaja Kesari Yoga and aspect on it by benefic Mercury improves its matters to some extent;
- But, aspect of 6th lord Sun on Moon again hampers related matters of Moon;
- Thus, during dasha periods of Moon, mixed – good & bad both results are likely to be fructified;
Note: In the given birth chart, Jupiter, Venus & Mars are are not dispositors of any planet because no planet is placed in the signs of their ownership.
