Birth Chart Structure

We know that different kinds of birth chart structures are used in astrology; The popular ones are – 1) North Indian Style, 2) South Indian Style & 3) East Indian Style;

Here, we are taking the most popular birth chart style i.e., North Indian Chart Style for discussion; We will discuss the other two chart structures, especially South Indian Styled Chart Structure separately as it is prominently used in KP astrology;

A North Indian Structure of Birth Chart is usually a rectangular or square shaped structure; It consists of total 12 houses or bhavas; Out of these, 4 houses located at the center of the chart are either rhombus or square shaped; The remaining 8 houses are triangular shaped;

1). Zodiac Signs & Ruling Planets

North Indian birth chart structure consists of 12 Zodiac Signs; They are serially named and numbered as Aries-1, Taurus-2, Gemini-3, Cancer-4, Leo-5, Virgo-6, Libra-7, Scorpio-8, Sagittarius-9, Capricorn-10, Aquarius-11 & Pisces-12; Thus, the numbers instead of names of signs or rashis are written in the foregoing sequence in a horoscope; In a horoscope, these signs keep on moving in anti-clockwise direction whereas houses are fixed; The topmost house or the first house is the ascendant or lagna; Then, they are numbered as 2nd, 3rd and so on in anti-clockwise direction till the 12th house being the last; For more insights into Zodiac Signs & Zodiac Houses, you may click here;

These signs are owned or ruled by certain planets; Out of these signs, Cancer is owned by Moon and Leo is owned by Sun; Thus, these two planets namely Sun & Moon each has lordship over only one sign: Whereas each of the remaining planets except Rahu & Ketu has lordship over two signs; Mars owns Aries & Scorpio; Mercury owns Gemini & Virgo; Jupiter owns Sagittarius & Pisces; Venus owns Taurus & Libra; Saturn owns Capricorn & Aquarius; Rahu & Ketu do not own any sign; Rahu & Ketu treat their sign of placement as their own sign;

2). Birth Ascendant or Janma Lagna

A sign rising in the eastern horizon at the time and place of birth of a native is called Lagna or Ascendant of the native; This rising sign is indicated at the topmost rhombus or square of the birth chart;

For example, at the time & place of birth (at specific latitudes & longitudes of the place) of a native, if sign Cancer starts rising or starts being visible in the eastern horizon, then this zodiac sign is called lagna of that native; In fact, this sign may start being visible at a certain degree between 0 and 30 degrees; This particular degree of commencement of visibility of the rising sign becomes degree of the ascendant or lagna;

It is a universal fact that Earth rotates about its own axis and it completes its one cycle of rotation in 24 hours; Consequently, the natural zodiac consisting of 12 zodiac signs also keeps on moving and completing one cycle in 24 hours; consequently, each zodiac sign appears in the eastern horizon in the interval of approximately 2 hours; Thus, each of the 12 zodiac signs appears once in the eastern horizon in the total period of 24 hours;

Hence, from the above discussion, it can be concluded that out of 12 signs or rashis, any one sign can rise in the eastern horizon depending upon time and latitudes & longitudes of the place of birth of a native; For example, if number 2 is marked in the topmost house of your birth chart, then corresponding rashi to number 2 is Taurus; It means that at the time of your birth, Taurus sign was rising and so, it will be your lagna or ascendant;

3). Birth Sign or Moon Sign or Janma Rashi

The sign in which Moon is placed at the time of birth of a native is called Birth Sign or Moon Sign or Janma Rashi of that native; For Example, if in your horoscope, Moon is located in the house where number 3 is marked; It means that your Moon is placed in Gemini sign which is a corresponding sign of number 3; It means that your Birth sign or Moon sign or Janma rashi is Gemini;

Thus, in different horoscopes, Moon may be located in different signs; So, accordingly, Birth Sign or Janma Rashi is determined;

Finally, I request all of you to open your own horoscope or horoscopes of your near & dear ones and verify the above facts as enunciated about the Birth Chart Structure, Zodiac Signs, Birth Ascendant & Birth Sign.
